Level Winding

D e s c r i p t i o n :
Our customer has a need to wrap a paper evenly across a cardboard tube for shipping purposes.

O b j e c t i v e :
The linear motion of the paper guide moves the paper over an amount equal to the paper's width for every rotation of the cardboard tube. When the paper guide reaches the end of the cardboard tube, the paper guide stops and allows the tube to rotate one full revolution which produces a clean, sharp corner. The linear slide then reverses direction

and lays the paper down in the same fashion going in the opposite direction. The process is repeated until the tube is full. The paper products are manufactured in different widths. thus the paper guide's linear distance per revolution of the tube must be changeable. The winding speed also varies from product to product too.

S o l u t i o n :
A Mitsubishi amplifier and motor were chosen to drive a THK linear slide because of the ease of programming and its electronic gearing capability. An Aromat PLC was chosen to sense the proximity limit switches and in turn control the direction of the linear slide as well as count the encoder pulses in the reversal corners to insure a level wind.
